This course presents a balanced literary approach to the development of Standard English speech, grammar, writing and reading skills in different formats.
Each week there will be daily free-writes, a reading assignment followed by a quiz, and a short written composition all totaling 100 points.
Week One: Introductions, syllabus, discussion of course and texts, portfolio grading, grammar review, assessments.
Week Two: Read pgs. 1-16, Of Mice and Men. Quiz on these pages, including vocabulary. Grammar worksheet done in class for grade. Written summary of article.
Week Three: Read pgs. 17-37, Of Mice and Men. Quiz on these pages, including vocabulary. Written summary of article. In class grammar review.
Week Four: Read pgs. 38-65, Of Mice and Men. Quiz on these pages, including vocabulary. Written summary of article; in class grammar review.
Week Five: Finish novel. Final quiz, vocab. Watch film, discuss differences. Written assignment. Grammar review. Intro paragraph types.

Elements of Literature--LA 10
This course introduces students to the major literary genres of fiction, poetry and drama, while honing their ability to write cogent analyses of the texts using the terms of the trade.
Each week we have daily free-writes, a reading assignment followed by a quiz, and a short writing composition all together worth 100 points.

Week Two: Read William Saroyan story, discuss. Quiz on story, including vocabulary. Begin Sherman Alexie story. Written summary paragraph.
Week Three: Finish Alexie story. Discuss theme, analysis. Write paragraph. Quiz on literary terms.
Week Four: Read O'Brien story. Continue theme analysis. Write paragraph. Comprehension quiz on story.
Week Five: Read Baldwin story. Write analysis paragraph. Quiz on vocabulary.

LA-11, Environmental Readings: critical thinking and application of language skills to analysis of contemporary readings on environmental topics. Involves reasoning, argument and presentation.

Southwestern Stories--LA 12: Study of literary, environmental and social contexts in regional fiction and non-fiction of the American west.
